teacher talk-week 1

Welcome to the first week of Teacher Talk! I think I can speak for both Nicole and myself when I say how excited we are for this series. By now most schools are back in session so it will be great for all of us teachers to rally around each other and offer encouragement and support.

The first week of TT is all about who we are as a teacher. My journey to become a teacher began when I was in first grade. I had the most AMAZING teacher for first and second grade. She was fresh out of college, single, and treated us like we were her own children. She taught me SO much more than she will ever know. Thankfully I still keep in contact with her to this day. I decided in first grade that I wanted to be a teacher just like Miss Sherrill and I have never looked back.

[high school graduation]

I am currently in my first year of teaching. I teach third grade in a very large school in Metro Atlanta. I have 31 students right now and have the possibility of gaining another in the next week. Thankfully for the most part my babies are the sweetest. They really work hard and want to make me happy. It hasn't been the easiest start but we are in our fourth week together and every day gets a little bit better as they learn what I expect of them in my classroom.

On my first day of teaching this year my first grade teacher wrote me the sweetest note...

THIS. this is what it's all about. It doesn't matter how hard this gets for me.. I will try my best to make this the best year for them.

I've always known I wanted to be a teacher and I honestly have no idea what else I would do with my life! I am excited to get to know y'all and hear your journey to becoming a teacher and get a little glimpse into your classroom.

big things.

I told my mom the other day that it kind of feels like I'm pregnant. We've been hiding a secret for a month waiting to be able to tell everyone.. kind of like when you're pregnant and waiting for your first trimester to end. While our little secret might not be as exciting as a pregnancy announcement, we are pretty dang excited that we BOUGHT OUR FIRST HOME!! We are set to close on September 9th : )

isn't she cute?!

We started the house hunting process about two months ago. We weren't seriously pursuing anything as we are still in a lease in our town house until next summer. We got in contact with a loan company and began the pre-approval process, as well as found a realtor. Both the person we worked with from the loan company and our real estate agent go to our church.

We decided to look at a few houses just to see what our price range would give us. Again, still not seriously looking to buy. We walked in the first house and I immediately recognized pictures on the walls and realized the people who lived in the house also go to our church. At this point it was kind of just funny to me that our loan guy went to our church, our real estate agent went to our church, and now we were look at a house that people from our church live in.

After we left the first house we went and looked at a second house and then headed home. I called my parents and told them about the first house and how much we loved it and hoped it would still be available when we were really ready to buy. Both of my parents told us we needed to seriously consider putting an offer in because of the price/current interest rates. We were kind of caught off guard because that was not our plan. We started thinking about the idea and what it would look like for us to actually pull the trigger NOW instead of down the road like we had planned. We knew it would have to be exactly what God wanted for us because there were so many little details that needed to be worked out for it to work out for us.

We talked about it and decided to go for it. To us it was SO obvious that it was OUR home. Not only does every person we've been working with during this process go to our church, but also this particular house had been under contract TWICE, and both times it fell through. To us these were all signs from God that we should go for it. Needless to say all those little details worked themselves out (including the fact that we needed to find someone to take over our lease!) and we put an offer in the very next day and it was accepted the day after that.

So there it is.. our exciting news that we have been waiting to share!! : )

Tuesday Tunes

Happy Tuesday, y'all! I don't know about y'all, but Tuesdays are always really hard for me. I am always just so tired (worse than Monday's for me!) Thankfully I have a fun night to look forward to. I haven't seen my family in a few day so we are getting together for dinner : )

This morning I woke up to some new Ben Rector music and just wanted to share some with y'all! Ben Rector is one of my favorite artists--his concerts are always so much fun!

Have a great Tuesday!!

Enjoy!

This past weekend one of my college roommates and I took a road trip up to North Carolina to stay with our other roommate. We had the best time relaxing, catching up, eating, shopping, and of course...watching countless episodes of Real Housewives of Orange County. One of our favorite things to do in college was watch all the Real Housewives together. Still to this day we send each other video clips of our favorite "Vicki freak outs" because they seriously make us laugh more than anything in the world. So today I thought I'd share with you my top 3 favorite Vicki moments..enjoy!

Five on Friday

AHHH, I made it through my first full week of teaching. It wasn't pretty, but I made it..

I'm linking up for Five on Friday today!

(1) As soon as I get done with school today I am headed home to pack up and drive up to Charlotte, North Carolina to spend the weekend with my two college roommates (& hopefully see Bre!!) CANNOT WAIT!

(2) One of my BEST friends from high school texted me the other day to let me know her and her husband are expecting TWINS in March. I am SO excited!!

(3) I have been loving this "fall" weather we've had here this week. Gets me all kinds of excited for FOOTBALL season, jeans, boots, sweaters, hot chocolate, and all things FALL!!

(4) I feel like I have NO life right now. I get to work at 6:30am and never leave before 5pm. It's really frustrating that I'm so tired all the time. I just want to hang out with my husband and my friends... WAHHH #teacherpittyparty

(5) I wore my hair in a bun one day this week and my kids FREAKED out. It was hilarious!!! One boy even asked me if I was having a bad hair day (hilarious!) They really do make me laugh all day long with their innocence!! Also, my kids have been OBSESSED with this book that they call "old fashion" (because it was published in 1993 hahahaha). We read a chapter (or two!) every day and they just can't get enough.

Happy weekend, y'all!!

mid-week randoms

happy hump day, y'all! I am linking up again this week for mid-week randoms.

(1) this is my first full week with the kiddos. still hard for me to believe that I am the teacher and that I am responsible for so many kids (31 to be exact!)

(2) so far this school year I have only majorly messed up once. on the 2nd day of school my entire class *almost* missed their busses in the afternoon. last year the busses were called over the intercom, but this year they are displayed on our screens. since I was used to the way things were last year it completely slipped my mind to turn on my screen. The kids were having a great time singing and dancing around while we waited for busses to be called. after a while the teacher next door walked in and told me that busses had already been called and EVERY student was already outside. I frantically got my class to quiet down and then sent them SPRINTING down the hallway. THANK-GOODNESS they got the busses stopped in time for my kids to get on... but dang I was embarrassed!! all the teachers made me feel better by telling me stories of times their kids ACTUALLY missed the bus so that made me feel a little better. the next morning I apologized to them for not getting them on the busses in time and they all told me how FUN it was... sheesh!! ha!

(3) I am heading to charlotte, nc this weekend with one of my college roommates to see our other college roommate!! it is so hard not living with/near them so I am really excited for a fun weekend together!

(4) only 3 weeks until the first uga game (@ clemson!) I am so excited for fall, football, & cooler weather!!!

I hope everyone is having a great week so far!! we're SO close to the weekend!!

first day.

lord, let me be just what they need. if they need someone to trust, let me be trustworthy. if they need sympathy, let me sympathize. if they need love, and they do need love, let me love, in full measure. let me not anger easily, lord but let me be just. permit my justice to be tempered in your mercy. when i stand before them, lord, let me look strong and good and honest and loving. and let me be as strong and good and honest and loving as i look to them. help me to counsel the anxious, crack the covering of the shy, temper the rambunctious with a gentle attitude. permit me to teach only the truth. help me to inspire them so that learning will not cease at the classroom door. let the lessons they learn make their lives fruitful and happy. and, lord, let me bring them to you. teach them through me to love you. finally, permit me to learn the lessons they teach.

teacher talk: a link-up!

Yesterday was a day that I have looked forward to for SO long. Yesterday I got to meet MY students. Yesterday I introduced myself to parents as THE TEACHER (& half of them looked at me like I was kidding because I look so young ha!). Words cannot even describe how I feel. One second I feel so confident in myself and my teaching abilities, the next I am consumed with fear and doubt. I know that I am meant to do this, but it's scary, y'all! As scary as it is though, I cannot wait to greet my 30 (yes, THIRTY) new third grade friends everyday!!

With the beginning of the school year upon us Nicole + I have spent a lot of time talking about teaching. We started throwing around the idea of doing some sort of "teacher link-up" but couldn't quite figure out what we wanted to do. One day when I was driving home from a long day in my classroom it dawned on me that so many other teachers were doing the same thing as me and feeling the same emotions I was feeling. I thought about how nice it was to have so many friends who are teachers. I also thought about the fact that there are a lot of teachers in the blog world. Then the idea of linking up different teachers came to me.

"Teacher Talk" will be a link-up hosted by Nicole and myself the last Tuesday of every month and you'll get a chance to link-up and chat with us about whatever our topic may be! The main idea that we'll center around is encouragement. We want this to be 110% encouraging to K-12 teachers. This is a place for us to share ideas, struggles, and hopes while knowing that our fellow educators will encourage us and cheer us on. This isn't about who has the cutest room, best teacher outfit, or most successful management plan. This is about teachers sharing their hearts and classrooms and finding grace and encouragement there.

With all of that said, the first thing we want to do is offer a pair-up system! We want to get you connected with someone who teaches the same grade (or close to it!) or same subject that you teach. You'll be able to meet your partner, find out more about her, and chat about teaching! You'll be encouraged to send supportive notes through e-mail, twitter, snail mail...whatever. You'll also be sending one "care package" to your partner to show a little love and support. We know that the beginning of the school year can be all sorts of crazy, but we truly believe that when you connect yourself with someone in a similar situation you are better able to handle all that's on your plate. We think this will be a great opportunity to meet someone new and show a little love as we get this new year kicked off!

Here is a list of the topics we will be covering over the next several months:

(1) Tell us about yourself. What you teach, why you teach, where you live. (August 26th)
(2) Teacher outfits (September 24th)
(3) Introduce your partner and share your care packages. (October 29th)
(4) Classroom tour (November 26th)

How does that sound, y'all? I hope that all of our teacher friends are as excited about this as we are! I think it will be such a blessing to us as we get through the first semester of the 2013-2014 school year!

If you are interested in being a part of the partner system, simply head over to Nicole's blog to fill out the form and we will work on getting you paired up! We'll leave the form open until August 16th so spread the love! Pin the button on Pinterest, share it on your blog, post it on Instagram...whatever! Invite all your teacher friends to join and let's start this year off right!!

We also want to encourage any of y'all who may be in education programs in college. We would love to be able to connect y'all with others who are student teaching as well! : )

weekend review

Happy Monday, y'all! This is an especially exciting day for me because I get to meet my students today!! I'm all kinds of nervous but also really really excited.

This past weekend Adam + I found out some really exciting (and completed unexpected!!) news. We are SO excited & I can't wait to share everything with y'all soon! Needless to say it was a weekend of celebrating.

Friday night we had dinner with my parents to share the great news with them! We ate at one of my favorite places in Athens, Trans Met. I love their HUGE pizzas ; )

Saturday morning Adam, my parents, and Carolyne-Grace came up to my school to see my classroom. I had to walk down to the office for a minute and came back to find that my dad turned into a scientist ; )

and of course CG had to leave me a pretty on my board ; )

Saturday night we decided to continue the celebration by trying out a new place in town. Marker 7 has been open for a few months now, but we haven't had a chance to try it! I love seafood so it was definitely a successful meal in my book ; )

After dinner I made a Target run "just to return something." I should have known better because the Target Curse struck and I left with a lot more than I planned on haha!

Sunday was a day of church and family fun at the pool! Me and CG worked on our cannonballs ; )

Hope y'all had a great weekend!! xO

5 on Friday

TGIF, y'all! I am linking up for 5 on Friday today!

(1) Nicole + I are working together to create a teacher link up! We think it will be so fun for teachers to connect with each other and encourage each other as the new school year begins! We have some great ideas and can't wait to set them in motion SOON.

(2) I want every.single.thing from Red Dress Boutique. Especially these items...

[both images from here]

(3) Everyone always freaks out when I tell them I drive an hour to work everyday, but honestly I enjoy my commute. Yes, I leave at the crack of dawn, but that hour before school gives me a chance to wake up and get my mind ready for the day. And the ride home gives me a chance to debrief and relax, and by the time I'm home I am ready to get things done around the house. I just wish gas was free or that teachers got paid more ; )

(4) I have been obsessed with styling outfits lately. It's just so fun to me to get in my closet and come up with combinations of things to wear. Especially with the start of the school year it's nice to know I have a lot to choose from using minimal pieces.

(5) I always pick my outfits out the night before, but I really think I'm going to start picking my outfits out for the entire week on Sunday night, have them all ironed and hanging in a certain section of my closet so there is absolutely no guess work in the mornings. Kind of like weekly meal planning, but with clothes ; )

I hope your week has been perfect! Does anyone have anything fun planned for the weekend??
